Break Up With Your Black Puffer

Aug 12
3 min read

We're deep in a New Zealand winter and, from where I'm standing, the whole country is wearing the same black puffer. I get it. They're warm and easy. But your coat is the piece people see most from June to August, so it may as well be one you actually love. Here's how I'd choose one.

Start with your life, not the sale rack

Before you buy anything, do a quick wardrobe audit and work out what you already own and actually wear. Then think about your days. Do you walk, drive or catch the bus? A commuter needs warmth and a bit of waterproofing. A car-to-door person can get away with a gorgeous mid-length wool coat that would be pure misery in the rain. Match the coat to how you live and you'll wear it far more than the "special" one that stays on the hook.

"Choose something that makes your heart sing. That's the coat you'll actually wear."

One practical note: buy for layers. Your coat needs room to slide over a jersey or blazer without pinning your arms to your sides. If the fit's right but the sleeves are a touch long, a ten-minute tailor visit is the best money you'll spend all season.

Fit beats trend, every time

The best coat is the one that suits your proportions. Petite? A cropped or mid-thigh length stops you drowning in fabric. Taller? Enjoy a full-length wool coat with a bit of drama. Longline wool for elegance, a trench or belted style for timeless polish, a puffer for the cosy days. There's no single right answer, only the right one for your shape. Kiwi labels like Juliette Hogan, Kate Sylvester and Trelise Cooper do beautiful structured wool if you're ready to invest.

For the love of colour, not another black coat

You do not need a fourth black coat. This is where a bit of colour analysis earns its keep. Copper, camel and cream flatter warm undertones. Emerald and burgundy sing on richer skin tones. A winter white lifts the greyest Tuesday. A coat in your colour is the one you'll reach for on autopilot, and it quietly does half your outfit's work for you.

Puffer alternatives that still keep you toasty

If you love a puffer, at least make it interesting. A quilted vest is perfect for the dog walk. A metallic or mandarin-orange puffer (yes, I own both) brings warmth and a bit of personality. A cropped or belted style reads far dressier than the standard sleeping-bag silhouette. Glassons, Macpac and H&M all do fun options that won't vanish into the crowd at the school gate.

The blazer is your winter workhorse

A blazer is what I call the third piece: the thing that finishes an outfit and pulls it together. Over a dress for the office, with jeans and boots for smart-casual, or layered under your coat for extra warmth and shape. Start with two, one dark (navy, chocolate, deep green) and one light (camel or cream), then branch into print once your basics are sorted.

Layer for length, not width

Warm doesn't have to mean bulky. My rule: a merino or thermal base, a fitted shirt or blazer in the middle, a tailored coat on top. Offset a chunky knit with slim trousers. Pair a longline coat with heeled boots. You're aiming for a clean vertical line, not a marshmallow. Add a silk scarf and you've got warmth, femininity and polish all at once.

Your coat is more than a shield against the southerly. It's the first thing people see and the last thing you take off, so choose it with care.

If you'd like a hand pulling your winter wardrobe together, my personal styling and seasonal wardrobe sessions are made for exactly this. And if you're working on showing up with confidence more broadly, whether that's in the boardroom or through a big life change, I also offer accountability coaching and speaking and workshops
